My wife and I did not enjoy this movie at all. Although it is referred to as a comedy we found it extremely unfunny and depressing. Also I found the story contrived, weird and stupid. I really do not understand how people give it high ratings unless they have very strange sense of humour. It was bad enough that my wife did not sleep well that night - so much for comedy.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is an amazing concept executed brilliantly, with a surprisingly moving performance from Jim Carrey, it truly demonstrates his range as an actor. The overall concept that the plot follows creates a remarkably interesting perspective of if you could erase the past, would you? The surprisingly star studded cast delivers great and interesting performances and create an atmosphere of loss and emotion that are really thought provoking. The visuals that this movie uses to visualize the concept of memories fading like sand through your fingers is quite a feat and every odd aspect of this film is executed so well that it’s believable. Overall I would give this movie a 5/5.

This movie was incredible. I had heard so many great things about it and finally decided that I needed to watch it. I was surprised by how much I loved it. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was such a moving and fantastic film. It highlights the romance and relationship of Joel and Clementine, all the good parts and bad. They couldn’t be together and wanted to erase each other and everything they went through from their minds… they soon realized it was all a mistake. The acting was outstanding, and I loved the whole story. I recommend this to everyone! 5/5

Though I am not one for romantic or drama filled movies this movie was absolutely stunning and one that will stay with me for a while. This movie explores mental illness, loneliness and what we consider we need to be happy. This film is shot beautifully and contains amazing actors. Seeing the change in these characters is amazing because it feels so real and many of the situations the characters are involved in are relatable which isn't the easiest thing to do in filmmaking. You can really feel the raw emotion and how every action the characters make has an impact in the surroundings they are in and the people they associate with. Overall this movie is extremely beautiful and definitely worth the watch. 5/5 Stars.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an incredibly different romance movie. The entire movie is a sort of maze where two lovers try to get their memories of eachother erased, but one realizes its a mistake while he's in the process. This leads him to try his best to stop the process while he is asleep in his own mind. The movie is a very heart wrenching tale of someone trying to hold on to his memories while the other person seemingly had let go. It's honestly hard to explain the plot of the movie but Jim Carrey portrays his character perfectly and the movie is just incredible. 5/5

great movie.it's slow at first but the movie progressed it's gotten much better kirsten dunst dancing in her briefs is so beautiful. but jim carrey in a different movie than his slapstick movies with it's over the top hyper characters and catchy phrases. but this movie he was amazing.he was in love with his girlfriend but then it causes trouble as the relationship grew.he was amazing. elijah wood was at his top of his game when made this movie and kate winslet was amazing. one of biggest comebacks after the titanic phenomenon was fading.and mark ruffalo was at the same time was in 13 going on 30 with jennifer garner. so he didn't have much of role. it was mostly some of the cast that became the stars.great movie. it's a must own dvd.

I'm really glad I didn't pay to see this movie. The ONLY thing entertaining was KD dancing in her undies, the rest was a snooze fest.

A touching and unique romance movie. A man with a chance to forget his painful relationship starts to have second thoughts.

***SPOILER WARNING ***

It’s no secret that many male screenwriters struggle with writing female characters. The term “manic pixie dreamgirl” was coined by film critic Nathan Rabin and is described thusly: “[the character] exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” Essentially, the manic pixie dream girl (or MPDG) has no inner life or aspirations of her own, she exists merely to help the main male character grow, and probably to become romantically involved with him as well. I bring this all up because the man who wrote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Charlie Kaufman, is no ordinary screenwriter. At first glance it would seem that Joel and Clementine have that dynamic. He is a world weary and depressed romantic, and she a carefree and impulsive free spirit. But Kaufman deftly avoids the trappings of this cliché by making Clementine much more than just the girl that Joel loves. She even basically addresses this during a mid-film discussion with Joel. She says: “Too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive. But I'm just a f’d-up girl who's looking for my own peace of mind. Don't assign me yours.” A lesser film would’ve used Clementine’s quirks and idiosyncrasies as ersatz substitutes for actual character development. Instead, she feels like a real person with her own agenda and desires.

Probably the most detestable character (at least on the surface) is that of Patrick, the Lacuna technician. Patrick falls in love with Clementine after performing the mind erasing procedure on her and then trying to socially engineer her into loving him back. While lighthearted in tone, the undercurrents are incredibly unsettling. He uses Joel’s own words and actions, knowing full well that Clementine would like them and that she’d have no memory of Joel having done them first. He basically tries to coerce her into loving him with these underhanded tactics, and for a while, it works. Such predatory behavior has been played as comedic and even virtuous by other films. Perhaps the most notorious version of this is in Revenge of the Nerds, when Lewis tricks popular girl Betty into having sex with him by pretending to be her boyfriend, Stan. This moment is played for laughs and Lewis emerges victorious and unpunished, as at the end of the film Betty exclaims that she is “in love with a nerd!” Suffice it to say, Kaufman and director Michel Gondry have no use for any retrograde attitudes. Patrick is unceremoniously dumped by Clementine, and is never viewed by the audience as anything less than a pathetic, risible character.

A great movie that is hard to understand at first, but if you are a patient person, you'll slowly understand what this movie is all about.

This is in my top five favorite movies of all time, so this comment will be over-flowing with praise. It came out when I was about 16, so the perfect time for an indie alt-romance like this. And the perfect time to be introduced to screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (who is now one of my favorites because of this beautiful film). Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are so great in these roles. They really sell this story. I would recommend even for people who don't usually go for quirky flicks like this to check it out for the two lead actors, alone. It's a movie that deals with love and loss and tries to answer the question "If you could erase the memories of a broken heart, would you?"

I know a lot of people love this movie and I understand it's quality. My rating is based off of how this movie made me feel. I felt so depressed after watching this. I hated the ending, I hated the very idea of what they are doing in this movie, erasing your memories...it's painful. This movie probably deserves a higher rating because of the quality in the writing - that led it to making me feel so much, but by the time this finished I was just hurt - sad and angry.

CLEMENTINE: You're not a stalker or anything, right? JOEL: I'm not a stalker. You're the one that talked to me, remember? CLEMENTINE: That is the oldest trick in the stalker book. JOEL: Really? There's a stalker book? Great, I gotta read that one.
