Very well done movie about the attempted assassination of Adolph Hitler by German officers.

This DVD itself is defective. My DVD reader stopped halfway and could not go further. Eventually I found this movie on Amazon Prime Video and watched it using streaming.

It's tough, making a film about perhaps the least sympathetic group of political conspirators of the 20th century. What else would you call a class that, without its support, the Nazis would have been crushed in the 1920s, and also continued to support them, even as they destroyed all their best and most honorable generals? To the German military aristocracy, what was important was the end of the democracy nonsense, and the restoration of a political system almost as oppressive as the Nazi's own. I think the producers of this film were trying to make something truthful and interesting, but Tommy just does not have the acting powers to play a person like von Stauffenberg. Maybe one day I'll come back to it, but for now, I could not finish it.

This was one of my favourite war movies. It shows those in the Reich who decided to rebel against a cause they didn't believe in. It was very heartfelt and patriotic. Cruise did an awesome job acting. Couldn't see anyone else with that role.

An interesting topic no doubt, but I too found this movie a bit slow. I think more insight into von Stauffenberg's life/war history would have been helpful in building the character up more. Cruise did his best with this Screenplay, but I think he wasn't the best choice to play this role. My DVD had no Bonus features; too bad - they would have been interesting.

I watched this movie and was falling asleep. In the beginning it's extremely long and goes on and on and on.... Towards the end it picked up but for all the planning and plotting everyone was killed. I've always seen Tom Cruise in better films. Then again, anything that has to do with Hitler is cryptic and chaotic.

This is a 2008 American-German historical thriller set in Nazi Germany during World War II.
The film depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan
to take control of the country.
Tom Cruise plays as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key plotters.
A brief epilogue informs that the conspiracy of July 20, 1944 was the last of fifteen known assassination attempts on Hitler by Germans.
It also mentions Hitler's suicide nine months later and that Countess Nina von Stauffenberg and her children survived the war.
Historically, Stauffenberg first attempted to use his briefcase bomb at Berchtesgaden.
In the film, however, this attempt is set inside Hitler's concrete bunker at the Wolf's Lair while the Berchtesgaden affair is downgraded to
a brief scene in which Hitler meets with Stauffenberg to approve a revised plan for Operation Valkyrie.
In reality, the Valkyrie updates occurred over a period of several weeks at meetings between Hitler and General Olbricht.
Hitler most certainly would have been killed had the July 20th attempt not been moved to the outdoor conference hut.
In any case, it is a gripping, thrilling and thought-provoking historical drama.

Suspenseful, ingenious. You appreciate how many little pieces have to all work together for their plot to succeed, and yet they came so close.

Germany remembers army officers executed as traitors after failed 1944 assassination bid
Jul 21, 2009

BERLIN – Four German army officers who tried but failed to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944 were honoured posthumously yesterday, 65 years after they were executed.

The July 20 plotters – as they became known by the date of their 1944 execution – were viewed as traitors immediately after World War II, but have since been celebrated annually for their attempt to use a briefcase bomb to kill Hitler.

Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg placed the bomb in a conference room where Hitler was meeting with his aides and military advisers, but Hitler escaped the blast because someone moved the briefcase next to a table leg, deflecting much of the explosive force.

The day has gained significance as wounds over the war heal and Europe grows comfortable with reunified Germany.

Yesterday, German leaders honoured the plotters at a ceremony at the Berlin Ploetzensee Memorial Centre for the victims of the Nazis, and during the swearing-in of 400 army recruits at an annual ceremony in front of the Reichstag.

Germany holds the swearing-in ceremonies each year to highlight the resistance to Hitler from within the military and the inspiration for Germany's postwar army – with missions mandated by parliament, and not by the head of state. For years the swearing-in ceremonies were held at the Bendlerblock building, now the defence ministry, where the plotters were executed. But they were moved last year to the Reichstag, the seat of Germany's parliament.

Historians still argue, however, about the plotters' motives, given their conservative views and early support for Hitler.

The plot was recently dramatized in the film Valkyrie, in which Tom Cruise portrayed von Stauffenberg.
