Posing as an escaping Nazi war criminal, Bernie Gunther, Berlin's hardest-boiled private eye, arrives in Buenos Aires. When he reveals his real identity to the local chief of police, he discovers that his reputation as a detective goes before him. A young girl has been murdered in peculiarly gruesome circumstances that strongly resemble Bernie's final case as a homicide detective. Circumstances lead the chief of police to suppose that the murderer may be one of several thousand ex-Nazis who have fetched up in Argentina since 1945. Reluctantly, Gunther agrees to help find the murderer, and discovers much more than he, or they, bargained for.

" Eva Peron died from cancer, july 26, 1952, at the age of 33. General dr. hans Kammler was a n engineer, and was #3 in the SSand in charge of all Nazi missile projects. He disappeared in may 1945 and was taken to the U.S. as part of the Paperclip program. He is perhaps the highest ranking Nazi war criminal that people have never heard of." "huge quantities of Nazi loot fell under the control of the Perons. Four of the trustees of the money were murdered between 1949 and 1952." "Adolph Eichmann was kidnapped from Argentina in May 1960, and executed on May 31, 1962."

The 1950 episode of the Bernie Gunther series, which surprisingly seems the most grim yet. Bernie crosses paths with more figures from real history (e.g., the Perons) but this story actually takes you back in his history as a police officer in Berlin prior to the first book. A good read if you're a fan, but don't start the series with this one!

I liked this one. it comes just before the one i started with when Bernie is in Cuba and gets dragged back to Germany. This is good because he is investigating a nasty murderer who is repeating his during the war murders in Argentina 1950. And he finds nasty secrets of the Argentinian secret service and how they killed Jews too.
