Joon's a Korean immigrant living in 1980s' Bronx. Her parents have crumbled under the weight of her father's infidelity; he's left the family, and mental illness has rendered her mother nearly catatonic. So Joon, at 13, decides she'd be better off on her own, a choice that commences a harrowing and tragic journey that exposes the painful difficulties of a life lived on the margins. Joon's adolescent years take her from a homeless shelter to an escort club, through struggles with addiction, to jobs selling newspapers and cosmetics, committing petty crimes, and, finally, toward something resembling hope.

Written from a troubled teenager's point of view about street life, poor choice of friends and growing up in a world without her disfunctional parents. Not a likeable writing style for me.

A catastrophic story of one young girl's struggle to survive on the city streets. Nami Mun involves the reader in such a way as to show what it would be like to be in a position such as the main character's - alone and basically orphaned. The novel is written as a series of vignettes - each one showing a different scene of homeless life (such as in a shelter or at a clinic) - and shows Joon, the main character, interacting with different acquaintances, each one an assessment of the value of her life. A good read insofar as it illuminates the tragedy of the world, and how little moments of hope can keep one determined to go on living.

An excellent book about a young streetperson in New York. If you've ever seen the documentary "Streetwise" (set in Seattle), this book is like one of their stories. It helps one develop more empathy.
