Christopher Guest and his ensemble of actors and co-writers knock it out of the park with this brilliant, yet gentle, satire of the American folk music era.

This turned out to be very funny; not slapstick funny but just smart funny. The casting is excellent and I am surprised at how well the actors can sing.

To really get the joke, go to You Tube and watch some of the archival footage of the ABC TV show "Hootenany"

After watching such real groups as the the Kingston Trio and The Limelighters, you'll get the idea where the inspiration for the movie came from.
The Folksmen and the New Harmony Singers really nailed it.

Didn't get the humour, didn't continue.

This film is loads of fun particularly when you can kind of recognize who's being made fun of, but my niece (who wasn't born until 1987) still really enjoyed it.

It is so hard to keep from trying to match up the characters with real folk stars of the 60's... The cast is brilliant, the characters range from quirky to Very Weird, and the music is right on that fabulous edge between "It could have been an actual hit" and "Wait, what did they just say? OMG!" I love these movies. This and Best In Show are my faves, Waiting for Guffman close behind.

The other reviewers here don't seem to understand that this is a mockumentary...a satirical comedy. The humour is subtle and brilliant.

The first half of the program is a mixed of documentary, interview, comedy acts, some short musical scenes. It's lousy. The second half is very good. Many viewers may not be patient to endure the first portion of this DVD.

There had been abuse in my family... but it was mostly musical in nature.
