Wow. Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton carry this film. I was impressed and appalled all at the same time. There are some wonderful synopsis by other viewers below which are spot on. The extras at the end of the DVD are well worth the watch with a brief history of the case and some further insight to the people involved. Fortunately or unfortunately the death penalty was abolished in the UK while these two were in remand awaiting trial.

Peter Morgan, in his favourite oeuvre, on the meetings of famous people, in this case, Lord Longford, supporter of prisoner reform and prison visitor, and one of Britain's most notorious child murderers, Myra Hindley. You have to see it and judge for yourself whether you thought Hindley was a good use of his time.

In the director's commentary, either the director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech, Les Miserables) or the screenwriter Morgan (The Queen, The Audience, Frost/Nixon) says that these two people were, at the time, two of the most hated people in the UK. Hindley for what she did, and Longford, for being the woolie Leftie and champagne socialist who defended her.

There is a point where Lady Longford points out to her husband that other murderers have been paroled, but that Hindley is being treated with special venom because she is a female. Not true, Hindley was hated because Brady tape recorded the torture and murder of the children and people had tangible proof of their evil. Neither she nor Brady had a chance of ever getting out of prison.

"Inspired by true events" Longford is simply a masterpiece of film work. The cast and the script will have you from beginning to end!

Jim Broadbent plays Longford, a British Lord that works like hell to save the life of child murderer. Broadbent and co-star Samantha Morton both won Golden Globes and this is the first film where I became aware of Broadbent. You have to see it to its shocking denouement.

It is impossible to be a "good person" if one is too damn naive. Good people in the intelligent but not smart mold of Lord Longford often involve themselves in bad things. That said, it is impossible not to feel sympathy for him, plugging away at the most unpopular good cause, prisoner rehabilitation, with a most unpromising subject, Myra Hindley. Samantha Morton and Jim Broadbent give ideal performances. Why do we not see more of them in other films? BONUS: Andy Serkis as Ian Brady. Yay!

An interesting film. Great acting by the two principals. Lord Longford and Myra Hindley very interesting studies in good and evil.

It was not clear to me whether Hindley's criminal companion was telling the truth when he reported that she had been ridiculing Lord Longford. what did the rest of you think?

While brave hearts & minds spend all their life time, trying to redeem, see & seek the good in the wicked, the wicked NEVER FAIL to pry on the kindness & humility of the good people.

Finally, HONORABLE PEOPLE seem get always abused by society, while the wicked in society seek pity in honorable people.

This film makes you wonder, if criminals can be reformed & rehabilitated at all.
