Miss Tarbell's attack on the Standard Oil trust constitutes only about 20% of the book. It is mostly about her life before and after.
While Tarbell vilified John D. Rockefeller, and held herself out as a pacifist, she glorified Lincoln. Yet, for all his business misconduct, Rockefeller dealt in a legitimate product. And unlike Lincoln, he did not launch a ruthless war of destruction against his own countrymen in which 600,000 Americans died.
