July, 1899: When Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise the distribution price one-tenth of a cent per paper, ten cents per hundred, the newsboys, poor enough already, are outraged. Inspired by the strike put on by the trolley workers, Jack "Cowboy" Kelly organizes a newsboys' strike. With David Jacobs as the brains of the new union, and Jack as the voice, the weak and oppressed found the strength to band together and challenge the powerful.

Great flashback to one of my childhood favorite movies! Fun for the whole family.

A chapter in U.S. history about child abuse, when newspaper tycoons such as Joseph Pulitzer (Duvall) with R. Hearst in the background. With poor paper sales, they tried to pass on their losses to the newspaper boys by milking them. The result was a revolt and a war of David vs Goliath in which the newsies used the same weapons (i.e. news prints) to get their voices heard. They finally won with Teddy Roosevelt as a Deus ex Machina. Bale sang n' dance at the cusp of his adulthood, Ann Margret didn't have much of a voice but a nice presence, Duvall was past his prime. Great supporting cast of Newsies.

Newsies is a musical where none of the main characters can carry a tune with a plot line full of holes. There is, however, lots of well-choreographed ensemble dancing if that is what you are looking for. That earns it two stars. I was surprised at the poor performances from a few of the veteran actors. I didn't think it was possible for Robert Duvall to do a poor job acting (I'm a big fan), but he certainly did so in Newsies. In my opinion, the only reasons to watch Newsies are to learn a little history and to see a few young actors (e.g. Christian Bale) before they became more famous.

A proletariat uprising for labor rights told in catchy song & dance!

'Newsies' is a Disney musical from the early '90s. And, it is a lot of fun. Good tunes. Big dance numbers.

VERY GOOD 1992 Disney production bringing back to the screen a filmed Broadway style which I really enjoy. Film production adds a lot of elements not possible in a live stage production.
There were several entertaining full street filmed dance numbers with dozens of young men dancing lively! Also interesting street slang and other remnants from previous times...

How on earth was this popular enough to warrant a Broadway version? Duvall phoned it in (and an amateur appears to have applied his whiskers, which look ridiculously fake), Bale neither sings nor dances well and looks like he'd rather be anywhere else, Pullman should stick to non-musical roles as well although at least he makes an effort to "sell" his songs. I watched it on a recommendation and I'll think twice about that source.

Great production by Disney. A musical drama based on a true story of a strike by newsboys in New York City in 1899. Currently a Broadway show, but the movie sets add the authentic look and feel of the time.

Take the orphans, the nasty orphan overseer, the longing for a family, and FDR from Annie, the street urchins, and bullies from Oliver, the setting and dance moves from West Side, and a rally to revolution from Les Mis, give it a twist and you've got Newsies. The most fun was learning that Christian Bale could sing and dance!

The music is incredible, the choreography superb, the whole thing is well preformed. Five of five stars.
