As a teenager, Jane Rosenal wonders who makes the rules for love. As an older, wiser woman, she turns to a book called How to Meet and Marry Mr. Right. In a series of smartly comic, affecting, and insightful episodes, the Girl's Guide follows the life lessons of Jane, American Everywoman, as she maneuvers her way through love, sex, and relationships, and learns when to fish...and when to cut bait.

Delightful, funny (especially at the beginning), and a great beach read for women who like women that tend to think a lot.

This was a generally easy and enjoyable read. The only thing about it that was a bit challenging was that there were often big jumps in time and perspective between chapters which made it hard to follow at times.

This charming collection of linked stories features Jane Rosenal – a generous, insightful young woman growing up in confusing times. Jane is both light and serious, a lucky character drawn by a gifted writer. Recommended for readers who enjoyed Cowboys Are My Weakness by Pam Houston.

I *like* (not love) Melissa Bank's style of writing. It is simple and straightforward, and though it doesn't delve too deeply into her characters' inner workings and motivations, it is entertaining. If this were a novel, I would have given it about 3 1/2 stars. However, it's actually a collection of short stories that are not even in chronological order, making it difficult to follow Jane's life. And, apparently one of the stories is about an entirely different character (though I didn't finish the book). So, if you like understated short stories that are not related other than (mostly) sharing the same main character, then this is the book for you.
