Rate this:
This presentation will address the origins of the crypto-Jews of New Mexico from the Jewish communities of Spain and Portugal, through the forced conversions of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, to their migration to the New World in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The talk will describe the demographic, occupational, social and religious life of the crypto-Jews in New Spain, as well as the sporadic campaigns of the Holy Office of the Inquisition against this community in the late sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries. Attention will also be devoted to the early colonization efforts northward from central Mexico into New Mexico, and the possible cause and effect relationship between the persecution of crypto-Jews and the conversos' participation in the establishment of the new colony. The presentation will also describe the evolution of the crypto-Jewish community in New Mexico through the succeeding three centuries, and the Jewish customs and consciousness that appear to have survived. The presentation will be accompanied by slides showing the possible manifestation of this consciousness in cemetery headstones and other aspects of material culture.
